Come see our large selection of designer sunglasses. We can make most models to your prescription too!

Most people think of sunglasses as being just to reduce brightness or glare, or perhaps as a fashion accessory. This is true, but what isn't often thought of is the health benefits to the eyes from wearing protection against harmful radiation.

It's fair to say that we all know the harmful effects of radiation such as UV on our skin. The benefits of wearing sun-tan lotion is well documented to reduce the risk of the skin getting burned, wrinkled, or even cancer! The eyes are just as exposed to the sun as the rest of our bodies and can suffer harm from the same damaging radiation.

Anyone who spends much time outdoors can reduce their risk of getting such conditions as cataract, macular degeneration or pterygia by wearing sunglasses outdoors. Children spend far more time outdoors than most adults, and the structures of the eye are more transparent at their stage of development, allowing them to be exposed to more of the harmful radiation. Does your child have sunglasses?

A Pterygium

To the right is a picture of a pterygium. Not something you would want to have if you can avoid it. Wearing sunglasses will help you to do just that!

There are lots of different kinds of sunglasses ... from regular tints to polarised ones. Different tints have different properties. Some tints are better designed for golf, while others assist more in fishing, or skiing, or shooting.

Talk to your optician today about sunglasses. You can look great and help to keep your eyes healthy.
